Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Echinacea has a long history of traditional use among Native American tribes and later in Western herbal medicine for a variety of infections, including those of the urinary tract such as bladder infections (cystitis). The plant's purported benefits stem from its believed immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical records indicate that Echinacea was used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for a range of infectious diseases before the advent of antibiotics. However, while these traditional uses are well documented, modern scientific evidence specifically supporting the efficacy of Echinacea for treating bladder infections is limited and inconclusive. Most contemporary research on Echinacea focuses on its effects on respiratory tract infections, with only a few studies addressing urinary tract infections (UTIs). These studies are often of low quality, with small sample sizes or methodological limitations, and generally do not provide robust evidence for its effectiveness in treating bladder infections. Therefore, while Echinacea continues to be used traditionally for urinary tract health, its use for bladder infections is not strongly supported by current scientific evidence.
