Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Glechoma hederacea (commonly known as ground ivy) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy to support urinary tract health and, by extension, for bladder infections. Historical sources from folk medicine mention its use as a diuretic (to increase urine flow) and as an “internal cleanser,” which could indirectly link to its application in bladder complaints. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials specifically demonstrating its efficacy for treating or preventing bladder infections (urinary tract infections). Any purported action is based primarily on anecdotal evidence and the rationale that increasing urine flow may help flush the urinary tract. There are some laboratory studies indicating antimicrobial activity of Glechoma hederacea extracts, but these are preliminary and not directly related to clinical efficacy against urinary pathogens in humans. Therefore, while its use for bladder infections is rooted in traditional herbal practice, there is little modern scientific validation to support its effectiveness for this condition.
