Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and North America, as a remedy to support urinary tract health, including the management of bladder infections (cystitis). The herb has been employed in traditional systems as a diuretic, believed to help "flush out" the urinary tract and thereby reduce bacterial load. Historical references, such as those found in German Commission E monographs, list goldenrod as an adjuvant in the treatment of lower urinary tract infections and for the prevention and treatment of kidney and bladder stones.

Modern scientific validation is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that goldenrod extracts have mild anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and possibly antimicrobial properties, though these effects have not been robustly demonstrated in human clinical trials specifically for bladder infections. The diuretic effect may help increase urine flow, potentially aiding in the mechanical elimination of pathogens, but direct antibacterial action within the urinary tract in humans has not been clearly established. As such, goldenrod’s use is primarily justified by tradition, and scientific evidence remains preliminary. Therefore, while it is widely used in traditional practice, evidence quality is moderate to low (rated 2/5).
