Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hedyotis, particularly the species Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or "Bai Hua She She Cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in China. It is often included in herbal formulas aimed at clearing "heat" and eliminating toxins, which in traditional Chinese medical theory is associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs), including bladder infections. The herb is believed to have diuretic and antimicrobial properties, and thus is thought to help flush out pathogens and reduce inflammation in the urinary tract. While there are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting Hedyotis extracts may possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to confirm efficacy specifically for bladder infections in humans. Its use for this indication is therefore best classified as traditional, with limited scientific backing. Most modern clinical guidelines do not recognize Hedyotis as a validated treatment for UTIs. Thus, while its use is common in some herbal traditions, particularly in East Asia, the overall level of scientific evidence supporting its use for bladder infection is low.
