Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Javanese Turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), also known as Temulawak, has a long history of use in traditional Javanese and Indonesian herbal medicine (jamu) for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, liver complaints, and as a general anti-inflammatory. Its use for bladder infections (urinary tract infections, or UTIs) is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence. In traditional medicine, Javanese Turmeric is believed to possess diuretic and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to help flush the urinary tract and combat infection. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Javanese Turmeric for treating or supporting bladder infections are extremely limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated mild antimicrobial effects of Curcuma xanthorrhiza extracts, but these findings have not been directly linked to clinical outcomes in human bladder infections. Overall, while its use for bladder infection is supported by tradition and some preliminary biological plausibility, there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to confirm its effectiveness for this specific condition. As such, it should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for bladder infections, which require proper medical evaluation and, often, antibiotic therapy.
