Lactobacillus gasseri is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its role in supporting urinary and bladder health, including the prevention and management of bladder infections (urinary tract infections, UTIs). The scientific rationale is based on the ability of certain Lactobacillus species to colonize the urogenital tract and produce substances (such as lactic acid and bacteriocins) that inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, a common cause of UTIs.

Clinical studies have shown that oral and intravaginal administration of L. gasseri can help restore normal vaginal and urinary microbiota, which may lower the risk of recurrent UTIs, particularly in women. For example, some randomized controlled trials and pilot studies have reported reduced recurrence rates of bladder infections in women who received L. gasseri-containing probiotics compared to placebo. However, most studies feature small sample sizes, short durations, or use mixed probiotic formulations, making it difficult to isolate the specific effect of L. gasseri alone.

While the evidence is promising, it is not yet robust enough to recommend L. gasseri as a standalone therapy for bladder infections. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy. Nevertheless, current scientific evidence does support its use as an adjunctive approach to promote urinary health and potentially reduce the risk of recurrent bladder infections, especially in individuals seeking non-antibiotic preventive strategies.
