Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligusticum, particularly Ligusticum porteri (osha root) and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Szechuan lovage), has been used in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Native American herbalism, to support urinary tract health and alleviate symptoms associated with bladder infections. In TCM, Ligusticum chuanxiong is used to promote blood circulation and dispel "wind" and "dampness," occasionally being included in formulas for urinary tract discomfort. Native American groups have used Ligusticum porteri for a variety of ailments, including as a diuretic and for urinary tract complaints.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Ligusticum for treating or preventing bladder infections is limited. There are a few laboratory studies indicating that some Ligusticum species possess antimicrobial properties, but these studies are preliminary and not specific to the pathogens most commonly responsible for urinary tract infections. No high-quality clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate its safety or effectiveness for this indication in humans. Thus, while Ligusticum's use for bladder infections is supported by traditional use, it lacks robust scientific validation.
