Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plantago species, particularly Plantago major (common plantain), have a long history of traditional use in folk medicine for urinary tract and bladder issues, including infections. In various European and Asian systems of traditional medicine, Plantago leaves and seeds have been prepared as teas, decoctions, or poultices to alleviate symptoms such as burning, irritation, and inflammation of the urinary tract. The rationale for its traditional use is largely attributed to its reputed anti-inflammatory, demulcent (soothing), and mild diuretic properties, which may help flush bacteria from the urinary system and reduce discomfort.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Plantago for treating or supporting bladder infections (cystitis) is limited. Most research on Plantago focuses on its wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and mucilaginous properties, with only a few preclinical studies suggesting antimicrobial activity. There are no robust human clinical trials directly evaluating Plantago’s effectiveness for bladder infections. As such, while its use is justified by tradition and some plausible mechanisms, scientific validation remains weak.

In summary, Plantago is traditionally used for bladder infections, mainly based on empirical use and some supportive pharmacological actions, but high-quality clinical evidence is lacking.
