Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2
Shen-chu (also known as "shenqu" or "medicated leaven") is a traditional Chinese medicinal ingredient created by fermenting wheat flour with herbs and microorganisms. Its primary historical use is to aid digestion and promote the breakdown of food stagnation. In classical Chinese medicine, shen-chu is included in formulas to support the function of the spleen and stomach, rather than to directly address infections such as those of the bladder.
That said, in some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulations, combination formulas containing shen-chu may be prescribed to patients with urinary symptoms, not because shen-chu directly treats bladder infections, but because TCM often views digestive health as integral to overall health, including urinary tract function. The rationale is that by improving spleen and stomach function and resolving dampness, the body’s resistance to infection may be indirectly supported. However, in the TCM literature, shen-chu is not a primary or specific agent for treating bladder infections (such as urinary tract infections, UTIs).
There is currently little to no high-quality scientific evidence supporting the use of shen-chu for bladder infections. Most modern research focuses on its use in improving digestive symptoms. Thus, its use for bladder infection is justified primarily by traditional beliefs and is indirect at best. Overall, the evidence is weak, and conventional medical treatment should be sought for bladder infections.
