Achyranthes (commonly Achyranthes bidentata or Achyranthes aspera) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and other folk medicinal systems in Asia and Africa. Traditionally, the herb has been applied externally to wounds, cuts, and bruises to help stop bleeding and promote healing. Its use is often attributed to its astringent properties, which are believed to help constrict blood vessels and facilitate clotting. In Ayurveda, Achyranthes aspera is known as "Apamarga" and is mentioned in classical texts as a styptic agent (one that stops bleeding). In TCM, Achyranthes bidentata is also used for various blood-related conditions, though its main internal uses are for invigorating blood circulation rather than direct external hemostasis.

Scientific evidence supporting the hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects of Achyranthes is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Achyranthes aspera may accelerate wound healing and exhibit hemostatic activity, but the evidence is not robust or conclusive. No large-scale clinical trials have validated its efficacy for external bleeding in humans. Therefore, its reputation for stopping bleeding is primarily rooted in traditional use rather than strong scientific validation.
