Alkanna (commonly known as alkanet, particularly Alkanna tinctoria) has a long-standing traditional use in herbal medicine for the treatment and support of external bleeding. In traditional Unani, Ayurvedic, and some European folk medicines, the powdered root or its extracts have been applied topically to wounds, cuts, abrasions, and ulcers to help staunch bleeding and promote healing. The primary basis for this use appears to be the astringent and mildly antiseptic properties attributed to the root and its main pigment, alkannin. This compound is believed to help constrict blood vessels and form a protective barrier over wounds, aiding in the cessation of bleeding.

There is, however, limited scientific validation for these effects. While laboratory studies have confirmed some antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties of alkannin and related compounds, direct evidence for the efficacy of Alkanna in stopping external bleeding in a clinical or experimental setting is lacking. Most support for its use in this context remains anecdotal or drawn from traditional pharmacopeias rather than rigorous scientific trials. Thus, while Alkanna continues to be used in some traditional preparations for external bleeding, the level of scientific evidence supporting this use is relatively low.
