Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alstonia macrophylla, commonly known as the devil tree or "Saptaparni," is a plant widely used in traditional medicine across South and Southeast Asia. Its use for treating or supporting external bleeding is primarily rooted in traditional practices. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional medicine literature mention the application of leaf or bark poultices or decoctions to wounds and cuts to help arrest bleeding and promote healing. The rationale in traditional medicine is often linked to the plant's purported astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help constrict blood vessels and reduce bleeding.

However, scientific studies specifically evaluating the hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects of Alstonia macrophylla on external wounds are extremely limited. While some laboratory studies have identified general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in the plant extracts, robust clinical or animal model data directly supporting its use for external bleeding are lacking. In summary, the use of Alstonia macrophylla for external bleeding is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with little direct scientific validation to date. The evidence from tradition is moderate but should be interpreted with caution due to the absence of controlled studies.
