Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

American Basil (Ocimum americanum), also known as hoary basil, has been used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in Africa and South Asia, for its purported wound healing and styptic (bleeding-stopping) properties. Ethnobotanical reports and surveys document that the leaves are sometimes crushed and applied topically to minor cuts and wounds to help staunch bleeding and promote healing. However, the evidence supporting this use is almost exclusively anecdotal or based on local traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific investigation. There are very few, if any, clinical or laboratory studies specifically evaluating the hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects of American Basil. Most research on Ocimum species focuses on antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, or antioxidant properties, with only indirect implications for wound care. Although some related species, such as Ocimum sanctum (Holy Basil), have limited preclinical data suggesting wound healing effects, these findings cannot be directly applied to American Basil. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in external bleeding, the overall evidence is weak and primarily based on historical practices rather than validated scientific research.
