Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Anacardium occidentale, commonly known as the cashew tree, yields a product sometimes referred to as "Anacard Or" or cashew nut shell liquid. Traditional medicine systems, particularly in regions where the cashew tree is indigenous (such as West Africa, South America, and India), have utilized various parts of the plant for a range of ailments. In the context of external bleeding, traditional healers have occasionally applied extracts or preparations of the cashew nut shell, leaves, or bark to wounds as a means of promoting hemostasis and preventing infection. This practice is primarily based on anecdotal evidence and longstanding custom, rather than controlled scientific study.

Some traditional texts attribute the astringent properties of the plant to its tannin and phenolic content, which could theoretically aid in the contraction of tissue and reduction of bleeding. However, despite these traditional uses, there is minimal to no robust scientific research directly validating the effectiveness or safety of Anacard Or for external bleeding. Published studies tend to focus on antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of cashew extracts, rather than hemostatic properties. Therefore, while its use is supported by tradition, the scientific evidence is limited, and the safety profile—especially due to the irritant nature of cashew nut shell oil—remains a concern.
