Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Avens (Geum urbanum), also known as herb Bennet, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for treating external bleeding. Historical European herbal texts and folk medicine sources often cite the use of avens root or its powdered form applied to wounds to help stop bleeding, attributing this effect to its astringent properties. The plant contains tannins, which are known to constrict tissues and blood vessels, thereby reducing bleeding and promoting clot formation. While these traditional uses are well documented, there is limited modern clinical research specifically validating avens for external bleeding in humans. The rating reflects that traditional use is strongly established, but scientific validation is minimal, with most evidence being anecdotal or based on phytochemical analysis rather than rigorous clinical trials. Despite the lack of modern studies, the astringent and styptic effects recognized in folk medicine are plausible given the known actions of tannins in other plants. However, for serious or persistent bleeding, modern medical treatments should always be prioritized.
