Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bai Ji (Rhizoma Bletillae), derived from the tuber of Bletilla striata, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of various forms of bleeding, particularly external bleeding such as wounds, cuts, and ulcers. In TCM, Bai Ji is known for its astringent properties, which help to stop bleeding by contracting tissues and promoting the healing of wounds. Ancient and contemporary herbal texts, such as the "Compendium of Materia Medica" and the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia," consistently describe Bai Ji as an effective hemostatic agent, especially for bleeding from the lungs and stomach, as well as for traumatic injuries.

While there is limited modern scientific research to fully validate these traditional claims, some pharmacological studies have indicated that Bai Ji contains polysaccharides and other compounds that may contribute to its wound-healing and hemostatic effects. These studies, however, are generally preliminary and often conducted in vitro or in animal models, so clinical evidence remains insufficient. Overall, Bai Ji’s use for external bleeding is strongly supported by traditional practice and historic literature, though robust scientific validation is still lacking. Therefore, its evidence rating is moderate based on tradition, not modern clinical trials.
