Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Barleria, particularly Barleria prionitis, has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and folk practices, to support the management of external bleeding and wound healing. The leaves are often crushed and applied as a poultice to cuts, wounds, and ulcers. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use as a styptic (agent to stop bleeding), primarily due to its presumed astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. While these uses are well-noted in traditional medicine, there is limited scientific validation for its efficacy specifically in arresting external bleeding. Some preclinical studies have demonstrated that extracts of Barleria species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which could, indirectly, support wound healing and reduce the risk of infection. However, direct studies evaluating its haemostatic (bleeding control) effects are lacking or are very preliminary. Thus, while the traditional use is well-established, the evidence rating remains modest due to the paucity of robust clinical or pharmacological studies directly supporting its effectiveness for external bleeding.
