Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bee products, particularly honey and propolis, have a long history of traditional use in the management of external bleeding and wound care. In many cultures, honey has been applied to wounds and cuts for its purported hemostatic and antimicrobial properties. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used honey as a dressing for wounds to promote healing and control bleeding. The mechanism is thought to involve honey's high viscosity, which creates a physical barrier, and its hygroscopic properties, drawing fluid away from the wound and promoting clot formation. While there is some scientific research demonstrating honey's benefits in wound healing, including reducing infection and accelerating tissue repair, robust clinical evidence specifically supporting its effectiveness for stopping external bleeding is limited. Propolis, another bee product, has also been used topically for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, but again, the evidence for hemostatic use is mainly anecdotal or from traditional medicine sources. Overall, the use of bee products for external bleeding is primarily supported by traditional practices, with limited scientific validation specific to hemostasis.
