Bioflavonoids, also known as flavonoids, are a group of plant-derived compounds that have been used traditionally to support capillary strength and reduce bleeding, particularly in cases of external bleeding such as minor cuts, bruises, or conditions associated with capillary fragility (e.g., easy bruising, nosebleeds). The traditional use of bioflavonoids is closely linked to their presence in citrus fruits and their role in historical "vitamin P" therapies in the mid-20th century, when they were believed to enhance the effects of vitamin C and improve vascular health.

There is limited scientific evidence directly supporting the use of bioflavonoids for treating external bleeding. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that bioflavonoids may reduce capillary permeability and fragility, which could theoretically help with minor bleeding. However, robust clinical trials are lacking, and most modern guidelines do not list bioflavonoids as a primary treatment for external bleeding. Their use persists mainly in traditional and complementary medicine, especially in Europe and Asia, for minor vascular-related bleeding issues. Overall, while bioflavonoids have a traditional basis for use in this context, high-quality scientific validation is limited, and their effectiveness for acute external bleeding remains unproven.
