Bioflavonoids, a group of plant-derived compounds also known as flavonoids, have a long history of use in traditional and folk medicine for supporting capillary health and managing bleeding, especially minor external bleeding such as bruises or small cuts. Historically, bioflavonoid-rich extracts from sources like citrus fruits, buckwheat, and other plants have been used to "strengthen" blood vessels and reduce capillary fragility, which in turn was believed to help prevent or control bleeding. Early 20th-century research and anecdotal reports suggested that bioflavonoids could support vascular integrity, leading to their inclusion in some traditional remedies for nosebleeds, bleeding gums, and petechiae.

However, scientific evidence for the effectiveness of bioflavonoids in treating external bleeding is limited. Modern clinical trials have focused more on their use in conditions like chronic venous insufficiency or hemorrhoids, with some modest benefit observed in reducing symptoms related to vascular fragility. There is little robust evidence from well-designed clinical trials to support their use specifically for acute external bleeding. As such, while the traditional use is well-documented, the evidence supporting efficacy remains weak by contemporary standards. It is important to note that bioflavonoids are not a substitute for standard medical care in cases of serious bleeding.
