Borneol is an aromatic compound traditionally used in Chinese medicine, often as an ingredient in topical formulations for various ailments, including external bleeding. Historically, borneol (known as "Bing Pian" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) has been valued for its purported ability to "open the orifices," promote circulation, and reduce swelling and pain. In classical TCM texts, borneol is sometimes included in herbal powders or ointments applied to wounds or cuts to help stop bleeding and facilitate healing. However, the mechanism by which borneol might contribute to hemostasis is not well described in these texts, and it is typically combined with other ingredients known for their blood-staunching properties. From a scientific perspective, there is little to no direct clinical evidence supporting borneol's efficacy in treating or stopping external bleeding. Most modern research on borneol focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and penetration-enhancing effects rather than its hemostatic properties. Therefore, while borneol's use for external bleeding is justified by longstanding tradition, it is not supported by robust scientific evidence, and its effect, if any, may be due to associated herbs or the context in which it is used.
