Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Botanical blends have been used traditionally in various cultures to address external bleeding, largely due to the hemostatic (blood-stopping) properties attributed to certain plants. Herbs such as yarrow (Achillea millefolium), shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris), and witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) are commonly found in these blends. Historically, these plants were applied as poultices, powders, or washes to wounds, cuts, or abrasions to help staunch bleeding. Yarrow, in particular, has a long-standing reputation in European folk medicine as “soldier’s woundwort” for its purported ability to promote clotting and accelerate wound healing. Shepherd’s purse was similarly used in both European and Asian traditional medicine.

While some laboratory studies have identified compounds in these plants that may contribute to vasoconstriction or promote coagulation, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most of the support for botanical blends in treating external bleeding relies on anecdotal accounts and historical usage rather than modern scientific studies. Nevertheless, the persistence of these practices over centuries and across cultures suggests a perceived benefit, warranting a modest evidence rating based on tradition rather than scientific validation.
