Rating (out of 5): 2
Bur-Reed (commonly referring to plants of the genus Sparganium, particularly Sparganium stoloniferum, known as "San Leng" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a history of medicinal use in East Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), San Leng is primarily used to promote blood circulation, resolve blood stasis, and treat amenorrhea, abdominal masses, and certain types of pain. While it is not one of the primary herbs for treating external bleeding, some traditional texts mention its use as an adjuvant for bleeding disorders, especially those associated with blood stasis (i.e., when bleeding is accompanied by signs of sluggish blood flow or clots). Its astringent and hemostatic properties are less emphasized in major TCM materia medica compared to more commonly used herbs such as Yunnan Baiyao or Pu Huang (Typha pollen).
Scientific studies on Bur-Reed’s efficacy for external bleeding are limited. The bulk of the evidence for its application in bleeding conditions is based on historical use and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical trials or pharmacological investigations. Therefore, the justification for its use in treating external bleeding is primarily traditional, with a moderate to low level of supporting evidence.
