Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyris) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in some Asian and European folk traditions. Its latex and seeds have been used for a variety of purposes, but the application of its latex to wounds to stop external bleeding is documented primarily in traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys. The rationale for its use is likely due to the plant's irritant properties, which may cause vasoconstriction and protein precipitation, potentially leading to a reduction in bleeding. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence supporting the efficacy or safety of Caper spurge for this purpose. On the contrary, its latex is known to be highly irritating and potentially toxic to skin and mucous membranes, raising significant safety concerns. Modern herbal medicine and pharmacological research do not recommend its use for bleeding, and clinical studies are lacking. Therefore, while the use of Caper spurge for external bleeding is supported by some traditional practices, the evidence base is weak and overshadowed by documented risks.
