Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Capillary Artemisia (Artemisia capillaris), also known as Yin Chen Hao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been historically used in East Asian herbal medicine, primarily for liver and gallbladder conditions and to clear damp-heat. Its application in treating or supporting external bleeding is based on traditional practices rather than scientific validation. In TCM, some Artemisia species are believed to have hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) properties, though Capillary Artemisia is more commonly noted for its effects on jaundice and not as prominently for bleeding as other Artemisia species like Artemisia argyi (Ai Ye). However, there are some traditional records and herbal formulas in which Capillary Artemisia is used in combination with other herbs for topical applications to manage minor wounds and bleeding, attributed to its purported astringent and antimicrobial qualities. Scientific research specifically investigating the hemostatic effects of Capillary Artemisia is limited, and modern clinical studies do not strongly support its use for this indication. Thus, its use for external bleeding is justified primarily by tradition, with only modest evidence (rated 2/5) based on historical usage and not on rigorous scientific studies.
