Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cassia fistula, commonly known as the golden shower tree, has a longstanding presence in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Siddha. Traditionally, various parts of the plant, including the bark and leaves, have been employed topically to address minor external bleeding and skin wounds. The rationale for this use is primarily anecdotal and based on the plant's astringent and anti-inflammatory properties as noted in historical texts. However, upon reviewing modern scientific literature, there is little to no robust experimental evidence specifically validating the efficacy of Cassia fistula in promoting hemostasis or directly treating external bleeding. Some laboratory studies suggest mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of Cassia fistula extracts on wounds, which could indirectly support wound healing, but these do not equate to a proven effect on bleeding control. Thus, while its use for external bleeding is rooted in tradition, the evidence is weak and largely unsubstantiated by current scientific research.
