Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chamomile, particularly in the form of topical applications such as poultices or compresses, has a long history in traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of minor external bleeding, such as small cuts or abrasions. Historical records from European folk medicine, as well as traditional practices in regions such as the Middle East and India, describe the use of chamomile preparations to promote wound healing and to help stop bleeding. The purported mechanism is largely attributed to chamomile’s anti-inflammatory and mild astringent properties, which may aid in vasoconstriction and tissue contraction. However, while this traditional use is well documented in herbals and pharmacopoeias, modern scientific studies specifically investigating chamomile’s efficacy in stopping external bleeding are limited. Most available research focuses instead on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing effects. Therefore, while chamomile is traditionally used for this purpose and may be somewhat effective due to its astringency, there is insufficient scientific evidence to strongly support its use specifically for stopping external bleeding.
