Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Common Plantain (Plantago major) has a long history of traditional use for treating external bleeding. Folk medicine across Europe, Asia, and North America has employed plantain leaves as a topical remedy for wounds, cuts, and bites. The leaves are typically crushed or chewed and then applied directly to the skin to help stem bleeding and promote healing. This traditional practice is supported by the plant's phytochemical constituents, including tannins and allantoin, which are known to have astringent and tissue-healing properties.

While there is a strong tradition of use, the modern scientific evidence supporting plantain’s efficacy for external bleeding is limited to preliminary laboratory and animal studies. These studies suggest that extracts of Plantago major may have hemostatic (blood-stopping), anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects, which could contribute to wound healing and bleeding control. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Hence, the evidence rating is moderate, reflecting traditional use backed by plausible mechanisms and some experimental data, but without direct clinical validation.
