Coptis chinensis (Huang Lian) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb commonly used for its heat-clearing and detoxifying properties. Its primary historical indications include treating gastrointestinal disturbances, infections, and inflammatory conditions. The use of Coptis chinensis for external bleeding is primarily supported by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) texts, where it is sometimes included in topical formulations aimed at reducing bleeding and promoting healing, particularly in combination with other herbs. The rationale in TCM is that its "bitter and cold" nature helps to clear heat and dampness, which are sometimes associated with bleeding disorders in traditional theory. However, these traditional uses are largely anecdotal or based on historical practice, rather than robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly demonstrating hemostatic effects.

On the scientific front, some studies have explored the bioactive compounds in Coptis chinensis, such as berberine, which exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. There is limited evidence that these components may influence wound healing, but direct evidence for hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) action—especially when used externally—is weak or lacking. Therefore, the strength of evidence for its use in treating external bleeding is low, with tradition being the main justification rather than scientific validation.
