Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cowherb (Vaccaria segetalis, also known as Wang Bu Liu Xing in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in East Asia. In TCM, Cowherb seeds are believed to invigorate blood circulation and are sometimes used to assist in the treatment of external bleeding, such as minor cuts and wounds. The use is based on its reputed ability to "disperse blood stasis" and promote healing. However, the traditional references focus more on its use for promoting circulation and alleviating conditions like amenorrhea, lactation issues, and swelling, rather than bleeding specifically.

There is a lack of robust scientific studies supporting the efficacy of Cowherb for external bleeding. Most available research focuses on its other properties, including potential anti-inflammatory and circulatory benefits, but not specifically on hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects. Therefore, while there is some historical and traditional precedent for its use in this context, this is not a major or primary indication in traditional sources, and there is insufficient modern research to validate its effectiveness for treating external bleeding. As such, the strength of evidence for this application remains limited and is primarily rooted in tradition rather than rigorous scientific validation.
