Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyathula, particularly Cyathula officinalis (known as Chuan Niu Xi in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM), is traditionally used to support or treat external bleeding. In TCM, Cyathula is classified as an herb that "invigorates blood" and "removes blood stasis," and it has been included in classical prescriptions to address traumatic injuries, such as bruises, swelling, and external bleeding. Its use is rooted in centuries of empirical practice rather than modern scientific research. The traditional rationale is that Cyathula promotes circulation, helps resolve blood stagnation, and, in some cases, is believed to "guide blood downward" or facilitate the healing of wounds and control bleeding as part of herbal combinations.

Modern scientific studies specifically investigating Cyathula’s hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects are limited and inconclusive. Some pharmacological research has explored its anti-inflammatory and circulatory effects but does not clearly validate its use for treating external bleeding. Thus, the primary evidence for Cyathula’s application in external bleeding remains traditional, with little direct scientific corroboration. The evidence rating is moderate (2/5) due to the strength and pervasiveness of historical use, but not higher due to the lack of robust, targeted clinical or experimental studies substantiating this action.
