Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) has been used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in the Mediterranean region, for its purported astringent properties. Historically, parts of the cypress tree, especially the cones and young shoots, were applied topically to wounds and minor external bleeding to help staunch blood flow. This use is attributed to the presence of tannins and other astringent compounds, which can constrict tissue and blood vessels, thus reducing bleeding. However, the evidence supporting the efficacy of cypress for treating external bleeding is largely anecdotal and based on traditional herbal texts rather than rigorous scientific studies.

Modern scientific research on the hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects of cypress is minimal. While some laboratory studies have investigated the antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of cypress extracts, there is a lack of clinical trials or robust experimental data specifically evaluating its effectiveness in controlling external bleeding in humans. As such, while the traditional use of cypress for this purpose is documented, the scientific evidence is limited, and its effectiveness remains unproven by contemporary standards.
