Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Eupolyphaga sinensis, commonly known as the Chinese brown beetle, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is traditionally employed for its purported abilities to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, and stop bleeding, particularly in cases of external bleeding such as wounds, contusions, and trauma. Historical TCM texts, including the Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica), reference its use to "break blood" and "stop bleeding" when applied externally. The usual method involves powdering the dried beetle and applying it directly to the affected area.

Modern scientific studies on Eupolyphaga sinensis have largely focused on its anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. There is some evidence that extracts can affect blood viscosity and platelet aggregation, but robust clinical or preclinical studies directly validating its hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects, especially for external use, are lacking. Therefore, while its use for external bleeding is well documented in traditional practice, modern research has not yet provided strong scientific validation for this specific indication. The overall evidence rating reflects strong traditional backing but limited scientific corroboration.
