Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Heal-All (Prunella vulgaris) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for supporting the treatment of external bleeding. In both European and Asian folk medicine, the leaves and flowering tops were commonly applied as a poultice or infused wash to cuts, wounds, and abrasions to help staunch bleeding and promote healing. The plant was sometimes referred to as "self-heal" or "woundwort," reflecting its reputation for wound care. This usage is supported by historical herbal texts and ethnobotanical reports, but not by robust clinical trials.

Laboratory studies have identified that Heal-All contains tannins and other astringent compounds, which can constrict tissue and blood vessels, theoretically helping to reduce bleeding when applied topically. There are also some antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties observed in vitro, which might aid wound healing, though these effects are not specific to bleeding control.

However, there is a lack of modern clinical evidence or controlled studies specifically validating the effectiveness of Heal-All for stopping external bleeding in humans. Its use for this purpose remains primarily based on tradition and historical precedent, rather than scientific validation.
