Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Homalomena, a genus of perennial herbs, is used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia. The use of Homalomena species for treating or supporting external bleeding is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than being scientifically validated. Ethnobotanical surveys from countries such as China, India, and parts of Southeast Asia document the use of Homalomena rhizomes or leaves as topical agents to help stop bleeding, often in the form of poultices or crushed plant material applied directly to wounds. Traditional texts, such as those in Chinese materia medica, may mention its astringent properties, which are believed to help constrict tissue and reduce bleeding externally.

However, scientific studies specifically examining the hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects of Homalomena are sparse. Some phytochemical analyses have identified bioactive compounds in certain Homalomena species, such as flavonoids and tannins, which are known for their astringent and wound-healing properties in other plants. Nevertheless, there is a lack of rigorous clinical or preclinical studies directly validating the efficacy of Homalomena for external bleeding. Therefore, its use for this purpose remains chiefly based on tradition, with minimal scientific corroboration to date.
