Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hydrogen peroxide has traditionally been used as a topical antiseptic and to support the management of minor external bleeding. Its use is primarily based on its ability to release oxygen upon contact with blood and tissue, creating a bubbling action that helps to mechanically clean wounds and potentially assist with clot formation by promoting local vasoconstriction. However, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for stopping bleeding is limited. Most modern medical guidelines do not recommend hydrogen peroxide for this purpose, as studies have shown that while it can help clean wounds, it may also cause tissue irritation and delay healing by damaging fibroblasts and new tissue growth. Its hemostatic effect is considered minimal compared to other methods such as direct pressure or the use of hemostatic agents. Therefore, while hydrogen peroxide has a long-standing traditional use in minor wound care, current evidence does not strongly support its use specifically for bleeding control, and safer, more effective alternatives are generally preferred in medical practice.
