Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and other systems of traditional medicine in India for various health conditions, including external bleeding. The bark and flowers of Kachnar are commonly applied as a poultice or in the form of decoctions to wounds and cuts with the intention of stopping bleeding and promoting healing. The traditional rationale is based on its purported astringent properties, which are believed to constrict tissues and help in hemostasis (the process of stopping bleeding). Several classical Ayurvedic texts, like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, mention Kachnar as a remedy for wounds and bleeding disorders, usually as part of compound formulations. However, there is limited direct scientific evidence supporting this specific use. While some studies indicate that Kachnar possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, direct studies on its hemostatic (bleeding control) effects, especially in human clinical trials, are lacking. Most modern research on Kachnar focuses on its potential for thyroid regulation, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer effects rather than wound healing or bleeding control. Therefore, the support for its use in treating external bleeding is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation.
