Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kokilaksha (Asteracantha longifolia, also known as Hygrophila auriculata) is traditionally used in Ayurveda for various ailments, including bleeding disorders. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita mention Kokilaksha as an ingredient in formulations aimed at pacifying "Pitta" and treating "Rakta-pitta," a term often interpreted as bleeding disorders. The plant is described as having astringent and cooling properties, which are believed in Ayurvedic theory to help control bleeding, especially external bleeding such as wounds or ulcers.

However, the evidence supporting its use for external bleeding is primarily traditional. While some preclinical studies have investigated the plant for anti-inflammatory or hepatoprotective properties, there is a lack of published scientific research directly evaluating Kokilaksha for hemostatic (blood-stopping) effects or wound healing in modern biomedical literature. The strength of evidence, therefore, lies in its consistent mention and long-standing use in Ayurvedic practice rather than in clinical trials or laboratory studies. In summary, Kokilaksha’s application for external bleeding is rooted in traditional medicine, and scientific validation for this specific use is currently insufficient.
