Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lesser speargrass (Heteropogon contortus) has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in regions of Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. In ethnobotanical records, the plant has been used by indigenous communities to manage external bleeding and wounds. The usage typically involves crushing the leaves or stems and applying them directly to cuts or wounds as a poultice. The rationale is believed to be related to the astringent properties attributed to the plant, which may help constrict blood vessels and facilitate clotting. However, while there are numerous mentions in ethnobotanical literature and compilations of traditional remedies, there is a lack of robust scientific studies validating its effectiveness for stopping external bleeding. No clinical trials or pharmacological studies have specifically confirmed haemostatic (bleeding-stopping) activity for Lesser speargrass. The evidence thus largely consists of repeated traditional reports and some anecdotal accounts, rather than modern scientific validation. Therefore, while its use for bleeding is supported in traditional contexts, the overall strength of evidence is moderate and primarily historical rather than experimental.
