Evidence supporting the use of: Levant Cotton
For the health condition: Bleeding (external)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Levant Cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) has been traditionally used in some cultures as a topical agent to help control minor external bleeding. The primary basis for this use is the absorbent nature of cotton fibers, which can help to physically staunch bleeding by absorbing blood and aiding in clot formation. Historically, raw cotton has been applied to wounds as a makeshift dressing long before the development of sterilized medical dressings. However, there is little to no scientific research specifically investigating the hemostatic (blood-stopping) properties of Levant Cotton beyond its absorbent capacity. Modern medical practice relies on sterilized, medical-grade cotton for wound care, but this is primarily for its absorbency and as a barrier, not due to any active hemostatic effect. There is no clinical evidence to suggest that Levant Cotton has any special biochemical properties that would actively promote coagulation or wound healing beyond its physical characteristics. Therefore, while the traditional use of cotton for external bleeding is well-documented, its efficacy is rated low due to a lack of scientific studies validating this specific traditional application.
