Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lodhtree (Symplocos racemosa) is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other South Asian medicinal systems to manage and treat external bleeding. The bark, in particular, is valued for its astringent properties, which are believed to help constrict blood vessels and promote clotting when applied to wounds or cuts. Historical Ayurvedic texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, mention Lodhtree bark (referred to as "Lodhra") as an ingredient in various formulations for bleeding disorders, wound healing, and as a topical application to staunch bleeding. The plant is often ground into a paste or powder and applied directly to the affected area. Modern scientific evidence is limited, but preliminary phytochemical analyses indicate that Lodhtree bark contains tannins, flavonoids, and glycosides, contributing to its astringent action. Some laboratory studies suggest these compounds may have potential hemostatic effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented and forms the primary justification for employing Lodhtree in external bleeding, scientific validation remains insufficient. The evidence rating is therefore moderate, reflecting strong traditional support but only weak preliminary scientific backing.
