Lysimachia (commonly known as loosestrife, in particular Lysimachia christinae or "Jin Qian Cao" in Chinese medicine) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in China, for addressing bleeding, including external bleeding from wounds or injuries. The traditional use is documented in classical Chinese medical texts, where Lysimachia is described as having properties that "cool the blood," "resolve toxicity," and "stop bleeding." Applications include topical poultices or washes made from the plant, used to manage cuts, abrasions, or minor hemorrhage. However, the scientific evidence supporting this use is limited. While some in vitro studies demonstrate that Lysimachia species contain flavonoids, saponins, and other bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory and possible hemostatic (blood-clotting) effects, clinical research in humans is lacking. There are no high-quality randomized controlled trials validating its effectiveness for external bleeding. Thus, its use is primarily justified by tradition, not by robust scientific evidence, and the available scientific support rates low to moderate. Further research would be needed to substantiate its hemostatic properties and establish safety and efficacy for external bleeding.
