Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Oxystelma esculentum (commonly known as Oxystelma) is a plant used in traditional medicine systems, especially in regions of South Asia. Traditional healers have used various parts of the plant for a range of ailments, including as an external application to support wound healing and to help stop bleeding. Documentation in classical Ayurvedic and Unani literature suggests its use as a topical hemostatic agent, usually applied as a poultice or paste to minor cuts and wounds. However, the amount and quality of evidence supporting its efficacy for external bleeding are minimal and largely anecdotal, derived from historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys. There is a lack of published, peer-reviewed scientific studies validating Oxystelma’s effectiveness or identifying hemostatic compounds in the plant that could explain its traditional use. No controlled clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have specifically examined its action on bleeding or wound healing. Therefore, while there is a record of traditional use, the evidence is weak and not substantiated by modern scientific research.
