Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 4

Panax Notoginseng (also known as San Qi or Tienchi ginseng) has a long-standing history in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of external bleeding. Traditional texts, such as the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), describe its use in stopping bleeding from wounds, cuts, and traumatic injuries. The herb is typically ground into a powder and applied directly to the wound to promote hemostasis. Its use is also recorded in classical Chinese pharmacopeias, where it is valued not only for its ability to stop bleeding but also for reducing swelling and alleviating pain.

Modern pharmacological studies have provided partial support for these traditional claims. Research has shown that notoginsenosides, the main active constituents of Panax Notoginseng, may promote clotting and enhance platelet aggregation, which are important in the cessation of bleeding. Animal and in vitro studies have observed hemostatic effects, though high-quality clinical trials in humans are limited. Nonetheless, the widespread and persistent use of Panax Notoginseng for external bleeding in traditional medicine, combined with pharmacological studies supporting plausible biological activity, justify a high traditional evidence rating, though scientific validation is still developing.
