Pearl (Zhen Zhu) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries, including for the treatment of external bleeding. In TCM texts, powdered pearl is sometimes applied topically to wounds, ulcers, or abrasions to promote healing and stop bleeding. The traditional rationale is based on the belief that pearl has properties to "calm the spirit," "clear heat," and "resolve toxicity." Its use for bleeding is typically external—applied directly to the affected area—rather than for internal hemorrhage.

Scientific evidence supporting the use of pearl for hemostasis (stopping bleeding) is limited. A few modern studies have explored the wound-healing properties of pearl powder, noting its potential to promote skin regeneration and reduce inflammation, but robust clinical trials specifically focused on bleeding control are lacking. Animal and in vitro studies suggest that the minerals and proteins in pearl powder may aid tissue repair, but these findings do not directly translate to proven hemostatic effects in humans.

Thus, the use of pearl for external bleeding is primarily justified by traditional use rather than strong scientific validation. Most modern medical guidelines do not endorse pearl powder for bleeding control, and high-quality clinical evidence is currently insufficient.
