Evidence supporting the use of: Peucedanum
For the health condition: Bleeding (external)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Peucedanum, a genus within the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family, has a history of use in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia and Europe. Several Peucedanum species—such as Peucedanum japonicum and Peucedanum praeruptorum—have been historically utilized for their medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, antitussive, and analgesic effects. However, when it comes specifically to the treatment or support of external bleeding, the evidence is limited primarily to ethnobotanical or traditional sources. Some records from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) suggest the use of Peucedanum species for promoting blood circulation or resolving blood stasis, but direct references to stopping external bleeding are scarce and not well documented in primary classical texts.
Modern scientific literature has not provided robust evidence or clinical trials to support the use of Peucedanum for external bleeding. Most pharmacological studies focus on its effects related to the respiratory system, anti-inflammatory actions, or potential anticoagulant properties, which would not support hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) use. Therefore, while there may be minor traditional mentions, the evidence is weak and unsupported by modern research.
