Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Red Spiderling (Boerhavia diffusa), known as "Punarnava" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems in India and other parts of Asia. In Ayurveda, it is considered valuable for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and wound-healing properties. Specifically, the fresh juice or paste of the plant has been applied externally to wounds and bleeding sites to aid in stopping bleeding and promoting healing. The traditional rationale is based on its astringent and purported styptic actions.

However, scientific validation for these hemostatic effects is limited. While some laboratory studies have suggested that Boerhavia diffusa contains bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins, which may contribute to wound healing and anti-inflammatory effects, direct evidence supporting its efficacy in controlling external bleeding is scarce. There are few, if any, clinical trials focused specifically on this indication. Most supporting literature comes from ethnobotanical surveys or reviews of traditional uses.

In summary, the use of Red Spiderling for supporting or treating external bleeding is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with only limited experimental evidence and little to no robust clinical validation.
