Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Salt, including sea salt, has a long history of traditional use for staunching external bleeding and cleaning wounds, dating back to ancient civilizations. Many cultures applied salt directly to cuts or wounds, believing it would help stop bleeding and prevent infection due to its desiccating and antimicrobial properties. The rationale was that salt could draw moisture out of the tissues and bacteria, creating an environment less favorable to microbial growth. However, scientific validation for the efficacy of salt in stopping bleeding is minimal. Modern medicine does not recommend salt as a hemostatic agent; instead, direct pressure and sterile dressings are standard. Salt can cause significant pain when applied to open wounds and may damage tissues, potentially delaying healing. While salt does possess mild antimicrobial activity, this benefit does not outweigh its drawbacks for wound care. Thus, the use of sea salt for treating external bleeding is primarily rooted in tradition rather than being supported by robust scientific evidence.
