Rating (out of 5): 2

Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese and European herbalism, for the treatment of external bleeding such as wounds and nosebleeds. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the root of Sanguisorba officinalis (“Di Yu”) is documented in classical texts as an astringent herb that can stop bleeding and promote tissue healing. The herb is typically applied topically in the form of poultices or washes for minor cuts, abrasions, and other sources of external bleeding. The astringent effect is attributed to its high content of tannins, which are known to constrict blood vessels and promote clotting.

While laboratory studies have confirmed the presence of tannins and other polyphenolic compounds in Sanguisorba that could theoretically contribute to hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects, there are few well-designed clinical trials to robustly validate its efficacy for this specific use. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage patterns. Thus, while the use of Sanguisorba for external bleeding is mainly justified by tradition and some plausible pharmacological mechanisms, scientific validation is limited and the evidence rating is moderate.
