Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Shen-chu, also known as Shenqu or Massa Fermentata, is a traditional fermented medicinal product in Chinese medicine. Its primary use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is to aid digestion and address food stagnation, but it has also been ascribed the property of stopping bleeding in some historical texts. The justification for its use in treating external bleeding is based mainly on traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, certain formulas containing Shen-chu are mentioned for their supposed hemostatic effects, but these claims are largely anecdotal or based on empirical use rather than controlled studies. There are no high-quality modern pharmacological studies demonstrating a direct hemostatic effect of Shen-chu. Most references to its use in external bleeding are secondary, often as part of multi-ingredient herbal formulas, possibly due to the presence of other hemostatic herbs. Thus, while there is some historical precedent for its use in this context, the overall evidence base is weak, and it is not a primary or well-supported treatment for external bleeding in either traditional or scientific literature. The rating of 2 reflects modest traditional support, but little to no scientific validation.
